Avoid Credit Card charges when flying

By David • October 3rd, 2009

I recently booked some flights and was even more surprised to find the new ways the airline are sneaking in all the extra charges. I have come across a simple way to avoid the credit card charges they slip in at the end.
Try using a VISA Electron.
You can avoid these dirty little charges if you get something called a Visa Electron card.

surcharges

This is a disposable credit card. You do not physically get a card, instead you get a number much the same as buying credit for your mobile phone.
However, a financial adviser known to this journalist is adamant you can get a Visa Electron card by logging into www.entropay.com.

There is a small transaction charge, around 4.9pc, but it still works out markedly less expensive than paying credit card charges to airlines.

1) Don’t fly with Ryanair, easyJet, etc

2) Get a Visa Electron card

The problem is that the Visa Electron card, which is the only card most of the budget airlines don’t charge for transactions, is a rare acquisition for the kind of person who tends to buy flights.

Visa Electron is a very limited Visa debit card, designed for teenagers and students. It won’t allow you to go overdrawn and cannot be used in as many places.

If your bank offered you one, normally you’d be a bit offended. But it has one advantage – it does mean you don’t have to pay £5 per person each way to book a Ryanair flight.
